Comuna 13
Tragedy and Survival of a Community, Through my eyes
For many visitors, Comuna 13 is a must-see in Medellín, known for its colorful streets, vibrant atmosphere, and remarkable transformation. But having lived there from 1994 to 2007, I know there is much more to the story - including the violence, displacement, and loss that shaped this community and the people who are still overcoming its legacy.Join me to explore some of the darkest chapters in Comuna 13's history and understand how this community became what it is today. We'll walk through side streets and beyond the "gringo trail," looking past the Instagram spots. Most visitors only scratch the surface; we'll go deeper into the stories, struggles, and resilience that shaped this community.

The Neighbourhood that Medellín Almost Forgot
Explore Perpetuo Socorro, Medellín's creative district, and discover how a traditional industrial neighborhood is reinventing itself. Walk through former factories, creative businesses, cultural spaces, and new local institutions while exploring the people, ideas, and forces behind this transformation. This small-group walking tour looks beyond the trendy cafés and breweries to ask a bigger question: how do you reinvent a neighborhood without erasing what was already there?Along the way, we'll look at what this transformation means for the people who call Perpetuo Socorro home - and what its future might look like.

More than Escobar
From Myth to Context
Yes, we talk about him, but this tour goes far beyond. More Than Escobar shifts the spotlight from the man to the system: from glorification to understanding. This walking tour explores the global drug economy starting with the sacred coca leaf and tracing its path through international markets, economic forces, and human consequences. You'll uncover the untold story behind the cocaine trade: its indigenous roots, its geopolitical ripple effects, and the victims too often forgotten.(This is an experience by Real City Tours and can be booked directly at their website, as a group tour below.)

About Julio
I've spent my life looking at Medellín from the inside.I lived in Comuna 13 from 1994 to 2007, through some of the most difficult years in the community's history. I left in 2007, but Medellín has remained at the center of my life and work ever since. For 15 years I worked as an educator in Colombia and the United States — 13 of them at EAFIT University. Teaching taught me to treat a city as a living, breathing subject rather than an open-air museum — and that's shaped the way I lead every tour since. For the last 10 years, I've led tours through Medellín — over 2,000 of them. That's what Medellín Experience is built on.I want to show you a Medellín that goes beyond the familiar images and easy narratives. A city marked by conflict and resilience, tradition and reinvention, contradictions and remarkable change.Come curious. Leave with a deeper understanding of Medellín.
